Knowledge of Glogster

Content

Glogster is like a poster but better. You can add photos, images, graphics, sounds, videos and hyperlinks to other websites to your poster to make it interactive. It’s a collaborative online learning platform for teachers and students to express their skills, knowledge, creativity and ideas in their classroom. When you “glog” you are referred to as a “glogger”

Glogster is an especially useful tool to use for language arts. Teachers can have students read a passage and create a glog to answer questions about it. Teachers can also have students read a book and summarize it using a glog. They can have students make a glog about the setting, main idea or a main event in the book. They can also have students describe, contrast and compare characters in the book using a glog.

The teacher can also use glogster to create and present a lesson to her students. For example in a folk and fairy tale unit that students learn about in grade four, the teacher can use a glog to present the learning objectives, content, a timeline, names of stories they will be reading and learning about and a rubric for the activities they will be doing for that unit all in one place on the glog. She can also provide links to folk tales and fairy tales she would want students to read on the glog. She can also embed a video of a folk or fairy tale on it, and provide a link to a thesaurus or dictionary on it which students can access to find a meaning of a word and enhance their vocabulary. The glog would provide the teacher with multiple ways to present materials to her students based on their needs and learning styles (auditory learners and visual learners).

The benefit of creating and presenting a lesson using a glog is that it can be multimedia enriched. All students could have access to it at the same time in a computer lab and yet would be able to work on the lesson individually at their own pace. Another benefit of it is that students can have access to all the information they need to complete assignments for the unit in one place at school and at home. This would help them stay organized and keep track of the due dates. The glog would also allow the teacher to adapt the lesson for the special needs students in her class quickly and effectively. For example for a special needs student that has trouble summarizing the story the teacher can provide him with pictures from the story on the glog that would help him retell the story. For a student that has trouble writing the summary the teacher can have him speak it and record it and add the narration to the pictures. The possibilities are endless. Using a glog is simple, easy, free and fast and in spite of all the benefits it is not a time consuming proposition to create a glog as long as teacher has access to a computer and the Internet. It is also a fun way to engage the students in the learning process and provide them with an enriched learning experience.

How can you use Glogster in your classroom?

Sample glog complete with audio narration created on Audacity and uploaded to Glogster.

Glogster can be used a myriad of ways in the classroom for teaching and learning to engage students, sustain their attention and provide them with a creative alternatives to express themselves.

  1. Instead of using PowerPoint to present your lecture try using glogster! You can include text and images that relate to the material. You can link to additional web resources. It’s an easy, clean way to present information to students. When you finish lecturing, the glogs can be posted online for the students to refer back to later to study for the test
  2. Glogs can also be used as part of a Web Quest activity. Teachers can have links to websites that contain valuable information. Videos and graphics can be embedded right into the glog so the information is available in one place. These web quests are easy to create and the students will have fun exploring the glog.
  3. Students will also love to create their own glogs. Instead of printing out pictures and messing with scissors and glue, images and videos can be added right to their glogs. They can express an event in history, a science concept, characters in a story, or math concepts. The value they will get out of the project will depend on the assignment they are given. Assignments should be structured so that they are providing valuable information, but can also allow students to use their creativity and express themselves.
  4. Glogster is a wonderful tool to create multimedia enriched lessons, activities and presentations.
  5. It provides a platform for students to work collaboratively in a group and individually at their own pace to express their creativity
  6. It allows teachers to create lessons that adhere to and encompass e-learning principles.
  7. It’s easy to use and students of all ages from grades 4 through grade 8 as well as special needs students can use this tool to make presentations.
  8. Teachers can make lessons more engaging for students by incorporating multimedia and make them more accessible by using sounds, videos, graphics and text for special needs students.
  9. There is a very small learning curve when using glogster
  10. It’s user friendly and doesn’t take long to master
  11. It is versatile and can be teacher created, student created and can be used as study guides
  12. Glogster Edu allows teachers to view their students’ work easily
  13. Glogs can be embedded in other formats, like on class webpages or wikis.
  14. Uploading images and video (from YouTube.com, for example) is very easy
  15. Glogs can be accessed anywhere so students can view and edit from home, in the computer lab, or in the classroom
  16. The limited space forces the students to think about how best to present the information and how to communicate their ideas.
  17. In language arts Glogs can be used to create a poster to compare and contrast two characters in a story or two books.
  18. To retell a story with a beginning, middle and end with pictures and text or audio.
  19. To summarize a story.
  20. To create a poetry glog. On the glog put a picture of the student and the poems he/she created as well as a recording of them reading one of their poems. This example is great because it allows students to be creative and express themselves. It is also a very interactive activity that keeps students engaged throughout the lesson. The glog also gives students a finished product that they can share with the class and their families. Having the students read their poems on the glogs also gives them a chance to practice their oral communication skills.

Tips for teachers
When you have your students create glogs for a project, make sure they have thought through the content before they are allowed to start playing with the application. They can become easily distracted if they don’t have a layout in mind or video and pictures they are going to use. While Glogster is very easy to use, it does take some exploring to get used to it. If you will be using it a lot in your classroom, introduce it to students at the beginning of the year. Have them create a personal glog introducing themselves to you. They will have fun expressing themselves and it is a great way for you get learn about them. Use Glogster Edu. It has great resources for teachers and is safe for the students to use.

Sample Glogs you will see how some glogs have followed the e-learning principles and some have not.

Evaluation/Test Your Self

Complete these activities and then complete an evaluation survey on the evaluation page of this wiki. You can navigate to that page from the table of contents or the navigation menu on the right.

1) Sign up for a free Glogster Account
Create a glog to compare and contrast on a topic of your choice here are some suggestions of topics for your glog, You don't have to use these. You can use any topic.
  1. Plants and animals how they are similar and how they are different
  2. Two ancient civilizations
  3. Two Native American tribes
  4. Two cultures

The glog should have at least four images, a sound clip or a video clip.
The glog should also have text.
Use two e-learning principles we have learned in EDTC 640 and highlight them in your glog
Provide the URL for your glog for the class to view
OR

2) Create a poetry glog for students in grade 6. On the glog, have a picture of yourself, links to two websites that have children's poetry. Put 2-3 poems and 2-3 images related to the theme of the poem on the glog. The poems can be something you have created or something you get from one of the poetry resources you are recommending.
Put a recording of you reading one of the poems on the glog. ( Tip- create the recording using Audacity and save it on your computer, you can then upload the recording to the glog when you create your glog ) Be mindful of e-learning principles when creating your glog.

AND

3) Create a lesson plan using glogster to teach a biography unit to students in grade 5. Instead of using a PowerPoint presentation or other forms of presentation use glogster to present the lesson to the students, complete with instructions, lesson objectives, homework assignment,a rubric, timeline, and a links to websites you would like students to explore to gather information for the project. Also make a sample biography glog and embed it or attach a link (URL) of it on this glog for your students to see what you are expecting of them for this assignment.

OR

4) Create a glog to portray a character in a book (you can use a book like Cinderella or Harry Porter or something we all know about) you have read. When using this example in the classroom you can pick the book students have just completed reading in class. Express 3-4 qualities of this character giving evidence from the story to support your answer using graphics, narration or text. For example, in the Cinderella story I would say, " Cinderella was hardworking because she cleaned the floors, washed the dishes and made the beds" I would find an image that showed Cinderella cleaning the floor and add text or narration under the image saying Cinderella is hardworking because..... be creative and highlight one e-learning principle on your glog.

In the glog include at least three images
Cite the source of the images you use
Embed the final poster in your wiki or your website

Text Elements
Put the name of the book and the author on the poster
Use at least one quote from the book that relates to the theme of the poster

OR

5) Create a glog about exploring weather for an elementary school classroom. The glog should include a video or a video clip showing one type of a weather condition. For example rain, snow, blizzard, storm, hurricane, tornado etc. Then use graphics to define at least 3-5 weather terms. Use text or narration to describe the graphics. For example you can talk about the the evaporation cycle, how clouds are formed, different types of clouds anything weather related. The images can me related to one type of weather condition or many different types of weather. You can use images to explain how a tornado is formed or images of many different types of severe weather. Include at least two links to websites for further exploration. Be mindful of e-learning principles. A glog like this could be used for students to explore like in a web-quest, or for studying at home.
